Kakashi was a student of the 4th Hokage.
He obtained his sharingan eye from his friend, Uchiha Obito, who was mortally wounded
on Kakashi's first mission as a jounin.
Kakashi always emphasizes teamwork because he believes that someone who does not understand
teamwork is not worthy of becoming a ninja. This behavoir (in my way of reasoning) stems from Obito's death.
When Kakashi was young his father, Konoha's 'White Fang' (Hatake Sakumo), went against
the ninja code to save his teammembers, but when he returned to Konoha the villagers thought of him as less than a hero. Sakumo
killed himself because the people of his village did not approve of him any longer and because his son acted like he wasn't
even alive. Kakashi was angry with his father after that and then, a couple years into the future, Obito was doing just
as Sakumo did. He wouldn't give up on saving Rin from the enemy nins, and as a result he lost his life. This is why I
believe Kakashi goes to the memorial stone to pray for his friend, because he feels that he is guilty of causing Obito's untimley
death.
